All About Clear Aligners

Most people think of traditional metal braces when thinking of orthodontic treatment. However, clear aligners are a newer and increasingly popular form of treatment to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted. Clear aligners offer another option for those who want to improve their smile, but may not want to go through traditional orthodontic treatment consisting of wires and brackets. At Orthodontic Specialists of Southern Minnesota, we take great pride in offering clear aligner treatment and personalized treatment plans to ensure you leave with a smile you can’t wait to show off.

What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are a series of thin, plastic-like trays that are custom-formed to the patient’s mouth. Each aligner contains subtle changes to reposition the teeth until they gradually transform into a perfect smile.

What to Expect During Clear Aligner Treatment

Dr. Hulwi will discuss all treatment options with you during your first appointment. If you decide to move forward with clear aligner treatment, you will have a 3D scan taken of your teeth. Don’t worry, it’s not painful (it’s actually pretty cool). This allows Dr. Hulwi to reposition your teeth using the latest technology and produce your custom aligners. Each aligner will gently reposition your teeth millimeter by millimeter until they have reached proper alignment.

While clear aligners are removable, you should be wearing them for the majority of the day. Some exceptions would be while eating, drinking (except for water), brushing, and flossing. However, since they are removable, you do not have any food restrictions and you can brush and floss normally to maintain proper oral hygiene throughout treatment.

Caring for Your Smile During Clear Aligner Treatment

  1. Remove your aligners anytime you eat or drink anything other than plain water

  2. Brush and floss after eating and drinking

  3. Clean your aligners properly

  4. Rinse your clear aligners every time you take them out

  5. Follow the guidelines from your orthodontist
