Can I eat candy with braces?

Just like with food, there are certain candies that are best to avoid while you have braces. But don’t worry! There are plenty of candies that are safe to eat with braces, whether you’re looking for the best Halloween candy or just a sweet snack.

What Candies Are Safe for Braces?

The good news is that many of your favorite treats are perfectly safe to eat with braces! Soft snacks that do not contain peanuts, caramel, or toffee can be safely eaten with braces. However, make sure to brush and floss your teeth thoroughly after consuming sweets to remove any sugar left on your teeth.

  • Chocolate (without peanuts or caramel)

  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

  • Kit Kats

  • Soft Cookies

What Candies Are Not Safe for Braces?

Sadly, not all candy is safe for braces but let us explain why. Certain candies can be difficult to remove and even cause damage your braces. For example, chewy candies, like caramel or Mike and Ike’s can easily adhere to your teeth and braces making it difficult to brush away. They can also damage your braces by pulling at your brackets and wires each time you chew. Likewise, crunchy or hard candies can break your bracket in a single bite, which is why it is always best to eat soft treats as described above.

As a general rule, it is best to avoid candies that are hard, chewy, sticky, or filled with caramel or peanuts.
